Former President Donald Trump was shot and injured in an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The attack left one spectator dead and the gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, killed by security forces. Trump sustained a bullet wound to his ear during the incident.

The shooting occurred early Saturday evening as Trump addressed supporters. Shots rang out, causing panic as the former president ducked to the floor. Secret Service agents quickly shielded him and rushed him off stage to a waiting armored vehicle. Despite the injury, Trump pumped his fist in the air and shouted "fight" as the audience chanted "USA."

The gunman fired multiple shots from an elevated position outside the venue, critically injuring two others. The FBI identified Crooks, a 20-year-old registered Republican from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. Footage showed a white-roofed factory building near the rally site with Crooks' body and a semiautomatic rifle on top.

Writing on his Truth Social platform, Trump credited divine intervention for his survival and expressed condolences for the victims. He emphasized resilience and unity in the face of the attack, stating his commitment to speaking at the upcoming Republican National Convention in Wisconsin.

The assassination attempt has heightened concerns about political violence in the US, less than four months before the presidential election. Security reviews are underway for the convention in Milwaukee. Trump was seen briefly waving as he left his plane in Newark, New Jersey, hours after the incident.

President Joe Biden condemned the violence, calling it "sick" and asserting that such acts have no place in America. Former presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush also denounced the attack, emphasizing the need for civility and respect in politics.

Many Republicans blamed the toxic political environment on Biden and his allies, highlighting a recent comment by Biden about putting Trump "in the bullseye." The Biden campaign paused all messaging and television ads following the incident.

The attack has prompted a reassessment of Trump's security measures and raised questions about how the shooter managed to target him despite the extensive security presence.
