Janet Yellen Urges China's Cooperation on Climate Finance during Beijing Visit

In her recent visit to Beijing, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen made a public plea for China's support in international climate funds and emphasized the crucial role that both China and the United States play in addressing climate change. Speaking at a climate finance roundtable, Yellen highlighted the need for efficient and effective climate finance, urging China to contribute to existing multilateral climate institutions such as the Green Climate Fund and the Climate Investment Funds. These funds are dedicated to combating climate change in developing nations, but China has been hesitant to contribute, citing its own status as a developing nation.

Yellen also stressed the importance of broad transitions towards achieving net-zero carbon emissions, including active involvement from the private sector. She suggested that the U.S. and China should enhance and align their investments in reducing climate change in ways that are compatible with their respective systems.

During her visit, Yellen met with Vice Premier He Lifeng to further discuss climate finance. The Treasury Department stated that climate finance remained a focal point of their meeting. Yellen also called on China to assist with debt distress in low-income and emerging economies by restructuring the debt owed by developing nations, similar to the actions routinely taken by the U.S. and the EU. China has previously been resistant to such measures.

President Joe Biden, while speaking to journalists in Delaware, mentioned that he had not yet spoken to Yellen about her trip to China. Yellen is scheduled to hold a press conference in Beijing at 9 p.m. ET on Saturday to further address the issues discussed during her visit.

This visit by Yellen comes as the United States aims to improve relations with China and follows Secretary of State Antony Blinken's recent visit. The collaboration between the two countries on climate finance and debt restructuring holds the potential for significant global impact in the fight against climate change.
