American Idol Judge Katy Perry Booed for Critiquing Contestant's Excessive Use of Glitter

Katy Perry Gets Booed on American Idol for First Time

Katy Perry, a popular singer and judge on American Idol, was booed for the first time during her tenure on Monday night's episode. The incident happened after Perry critiqued Top 26 contestant Nutsa Buzaladze's look while performing "Paris (Ooh La La)" by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. Buzaladze, who wore a sparkly dress and boots, was told by Perry that she would like to see her without any glitter in her next performance.

The audience at the Disney Aulani property in Hawaii booed Perry, while fellow judge Luke Bryan was thrilled to see the pushback. Despite the boos, Perry stood her ground and did not relent to Buzaladze's request for eyeliner.

This was not the first time Buzaladze had an interaction with Perry this season. In an earlier episode, Perry hugged Buzaladze after she apologized for a subpar performance in the duet rounds. The contestant explained that she was upset and didn't want to cry on stage, but apologized for not speaking up earlier.

Perry later addressed her comments about needing to have "more grace," saying that she related to Buzaladze's desire to be a strong woman, but that having grace was also important. She praised Buzaladze's talent and heart.

While the incident was somewhat humorous given Perry's love for glitter in her own performances and makeup collection, her point about wanting to be pulled in by the heart was a valid one. It will be interesting to see how Buzaladze performs in her next appearance, and if she takes Perry's advice to heart.
